HRIG provides immediate protection for passive immunization. It is administered only once, and to previously unvaccinated patients, to provide rabies virus-neutralizing antibody coverage until the patient responds to the rabies vaccine.
Is a HRIG injection painful?
Current rabies vaccines are relatively painless and are given in the arm, like a flu or tetanus vaccine. Human Rabies Immune Globulin (HRIG) will be administered around any wound(s) and may be more painful depending on the severity of the wounds. Adverse reactions to rabies vaccine and immune globulin are not common.
How long will Hrig last?
Human rabies immune globulin (HRIG)HRIG must be infiltrated into and around the bite wound site(s), and provides immediate, passive immune protection until the patient produces antibodies through the PEP vaccine series. HRIG has a half-life of approximately 21 days.
What if Hrig is not given?
If HRIG is not available on D0, administer the first dose of rabies vaccine alone. Administer HRIG as soon as possible between D0 and D7; from D8, it is not necessary to administer rabies immunoglobulin as vaccine-induced antibodies begin to appear.
How many doses of Hrig?
The recommended dose of HRIG is 20 IU/kg body weight for all age groups, including children.
What are the side effects of Hrig injections?
Tell your doctor right away if you have a rash, itching, hoarseness, trouble breathing, trouble swallowing, or any swelling of your hands, face, or mouth after receiving this medicine. This medicine may increase your risk of developing blood problems, including blood clots or hemolysis (breakdown of red blood cells).
Can we take rabies vaccine without immunoglobulin?
If no immunoglobulin is available, they have only 1 therapy option: use of a vaccine schedule that produces the highest and, hopefully, earliest neutralizing antibody response. However, treatment failures must still be expected.
Is rabies immunoglobulin safe?
RIG is one of the safest blood products available. Canadian Blood Services carefully screens donors and tests all blood. Blood is not used if the donor has risk factors or tests positive for an infectious disease.
How is Hrig administered?
HRIG should be administered as soon as possible after an exposure to a potentially rabid animal. The recommended dose of HRIG is 20 IU/kg body weight. It is strictly for use in wound infiltration and intramuscular injection (IM).
